Using SMS Marketing to Your Advantage

One of the great untapped marketing techniques is SMS marketing. Considering the increasing prevalence of people that have cell phones with unlimited messaging plans, this can be an excellent resource for any business in any industry. These SMS messages also have the benefit of being very easy to send and they also tend to have easy readability for customers. Because people typically read SMS messages, you are more likely to gain credible exposure through this method of marketing.

Got a Cool Promo? Let People Know Right Away!

SMS marketing also has the added benefit of allowing your business to send customers real-time updates and information. For example, suppose you decided to have a sale on some products or offer a big promotion from 2-5pm one afternoon. You could easily send out a text to those who have subscribed and offer that promo. Since people check their texts more frequently than e-mail usually, this promo is likely to reach a greater audience than other methods of marketing.

Keep it Short and Simple!

The one caveat to texting is that you must keep the word count minimal. Since texts can only have a short number of words in them or else they get broken up, it is advisable to keep your texts short. A good text might read something like a Twitter post: “20% off at your name brand. See www.YourNameBrand.com for more info.” While ads that are short and concise are usually the most effective, for promos that have more conditions (must buy a certain percentage or place money down), SMS marketing may have more trouble reaching the target audience.

All in all, using SMS to drive sales is a wise decision because for the most part it is cheap, quick, and can be very effective depending on the texts you write. Plus, many people are becoming used to getting updates and instant alerts via text so this method of marketing, while not used as much as perhaps it could be, can be very effective. Take care, however, not to send too many texts as this might have the inverse effect and annoy people or have them asking to be unsubscribed to your campaign. Aside from that, SMS can be fun and interesting – definitely add it to your marketing mix and see how things go!
